Autumn is a favorite season for many reasons, including the seasonal brews that come about such as Pumpkin Ales. We decided to put a twist on this popular style by substituting the pumpkin with sweet potatoes. The logic behind this idea was due to the fact that sweet potatoes contain starch, the primary ingredient involved when mashing grains. Mashing is where starches in grain are converted to sugars which can be used for fermenting. We kept the recipe fairly similar to many other pumpkin ales, but added a few twists to help make the sweet potato brew stand out a bit more than expected. With a handful of spices and a hint of vanilla, this brew is sure to be a favorite around the fall holidays!
